Without revealing the actual cost of trip, we found it interesting to review the breakdown of expenses.

Pre-trip/Preparation 13%

Includes Round-The-World tickets, laptop(x2), insurance, shots, new clothes/equipment.

Package 28%

Trip portion purchased in a package, including most of South America, Kilimanjaro climb, safari's, Palace On Wheels, Cambodia, Vietnam  and Sun City.  Of course, these costs could have been spread across air and hotel and spending.

Air 24%

Includes the 30+ extra flights not included in the Round-The-World ticket or packages

Hotels 14%

All hotel stays not purchased as part of packages.

Car Rental 1%

Rentals in Cape Town, Australia and New Zealand.

Spending 20%

Includes all additional spending including food/entertainment, non-package tours, and big ticket purchases, e.g., paintings, tanzanite stone, opal earrings, etc.

And the distribution of cost across the continents against the proportion of time spent in each continent.  From this we see that Africa was the most expensive, mostly because of the package costs, and Australia was the least expensive, close behind Asia.
